Sleep Paralysis: When You Feel Helpless There Is One Name You Can Call

Let me tell you about something that happened to me. It was one of the most frightening experiences of my life but it also became one of the most powerful reminders of just how real Jesus is.

It happened while I was sleeping. At least I think I was sleeping. I was in that strange place where you are not fully asleep but you are not fully awake either. I was aware of everything. I could feel myself there but something was different.

In my mind I was moving my legs. I was trying to move them like I wanted to get up or run. But here is the thing. When I looked at my physical body nothing was moving at all. It was like my spirit was moving but my flesh was completely still. I was trapped.

And that is when I felt it.

There was something else there with me. I could feel a presence. It was dark and it was heavy and it was pushing against me. It wanted something. It wanted to take over my body. I could feel it trying to force its way in. Multiple times I felt this pressure like something was trying to push me out of my own body and take control.

I tried to fight it. I tried to move. I tried to scream. But I could not. My body would not listen to me. I was completely helpless and completely aware of what was happening. The fear was overwhelming.

But then in that moment of complete helplessness I did the only thing I could do. From deep inside my spirit I cried out. I could not speak it with my mouth because my mouth would not open. But in my spirit I called out to Him. I simply said “Help me Jesus.”

And instantly everything changed.

The moment I called His name the darkness shattered. That evil presence that was pushing against me trying to take over my body it just left. It fled. It had no power against that name. I could finally move. I woke up and sat up in my bed and the room felt different. The heaviness was gone.

But I was not done. I knew I had to take authority in that room. So I prayed. I prayed out loud and I commanded any evil spirit lurking in the four corners of my room to leave. I said By the authority given to me by Jesus I command every evil spirit in this room to leave now and never come back in Jesus name!”

And as I prayed something amazing happened. I felt this warmth start to flow through my body. It began in my chest and just spread through me. It washed away all that cold fear I had been feeling. It was like being wrapped in peace.

I knew in that moment that Jesus was right there with me. I could feel His protection. I knew His angels were surrounding me. The fear was completely gone and all I felt was His presence.

Now I know people will explain this scientifically. They will call it sleep paralysis and talk about brain chemicals and muscle control. And maybe that explains part of it. But I know what I felt.

I know what I experienced. And I know that something dark and real was in that room trying to take over my body. But I also know something greater. I know that the name of Jesus is more powerful than anything.

That name is not just a word. It is power. It is authority. It is protection. Demons cannot stand against it. They flee the moment you speak it. I experienced that firsthand.

What To Do During Sleep Paralysis

If you experience sleep paralysis the fear can feel overwhelming. You may be awake but unable to move or speak. Your heart may race and your breathing may feel heavy. For most people the episode passes without physical harm. But if you already have a heart condition or health issue the intense fear and stress could put extra strain on your body.

This is why it is so important to know what to do in that moment.

First do not panic. As frightening as it feels the episode will pass. Try to remain as calm as possible and remind yourself that you are not alone.

Second call on God. Even if your mouth cannot move you can pray silently in your mind. Say the name of Jesus or speak a simple prayer asking for God’s protection and peace. Many people find comfort and strength in calling on God during moments of fear.

Third focus your thoughts on God’s presence not on what you are feeling. Fear grows when our minds dwell on it but peace comes when we shift our focus to God’s power and care.

Finally hold on to the truth that this moment is temporary. Sleep paralysis does not last forever and neither does the fear. God is near even in the darkest and most helpless moments.

A Message For Anyone Who Needs To Hear It

So here is what I want you to take away from my story. Whatever you are going through right now it does not matter how scary it is or how hopeless it feels.

You do not have to rely on your own understanding. You do not have to fight this battle alone. Just call out to Jesus. Surrender all your worries and all your fears to Him. Give it all to Him and trust that He will handle it.

The Bible reminds us of this truth in Philippians 4:6-7. It says,

“Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

I felt that peace. It came over me like a warm covering, and it protected me.

And there is another promise in Romans 10:13 that says

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:13

I called on His name from my spirit when I could not even speak out loud. And He saved me. He rescued me from that darkness. That same promise is for you too.

He will be there. He will protect you from any harm. He will rescue you. And when you call His name, you will find comfort you will find peace and you will find the solution. I am living proof of that.

His name is Jesus. The most powerful name of all. And He is waiting for you to call on Him.
